Rewatching episode 47. Feeling all the feels but with the unbearable poignancy of knowing what happens.
I paused this time to note how NY proposes to Feng Zhiwei. He says 你我一世相守 。This translates to “You and I, let’s watch over/defend/guard/serve each other for life.” What a fantastic, multivalent verb 守 is.
It so perfectly encapsulates what they have done for each other and been to each other already. A love revealed through actions. They are equals; allies against the world, watching each other’s backs, full of implicit mutual trust and faith in each other’s capabilities. Which makes all the later stuff even more heartbreaking, of course.
“Ning Yi, I have looked all over for you. What are you doing here?” “Ssh..you’re too loud. If they catch up to us, we’ll be dead.” “You know very well that we’re running for our lives, and that you’re in danger.” “Listen….the sound of the wind. Look over there.”
